One of the great privileges of representative football is seeing young players develop and progress through the pathway. This season has been particularly special for Cheshire, with several of our current representative players earing well-deserved international call-ups, a fantastic achievement for the players, their families, and the coaches and clubs who have supported them along the way.
Looking back through the years, Cheshire have seen some incredible players pull through the ranks.
Danny Murphy
Former Liverpool and England midfielder Danny Murphy grew up in Chester. As a youth, he played for local grassroots teams, earning selection for the Chester Schoolboys and Cheshire Schoolboys sides under secretary Geoff Reynolds and manager Harry Huxley. Danny helped his Cheshire County side win their first ever Northern Counties Championship and National Title in 1991 before earning back to back national titles in 1992. He then made history becoming the first ever player from Chester in nearly 70 years to win a cap for the England Schoolboys in 1992. He made his high-profile appearance debut at Turf Moor before joining Crewe Alexandra's academy. From there, Danny became the incredible footballer we all watched on television.
Phil Jakielka
Former England and Everton defender Phil Jagielka represented Cheshire Schools' FA during his youth career. Raised in Sale, Greater Manchester, he played grassroots football for local teams in Cheshire and was selected to represent the county schoolboys U15 squad for the 1997/98 season before progressing into professional academies.
Sophie Middleton
An elite recent graduate who represented Cheshire Schoolgirls representative squads between 2017 and 2019. A proud Cheshire Schools' FA alumni between the sticks, she progressed through the ranks to earn a call-up to represent her country on the international stage.
Josh Brownhill
Representing Cheshire Schoolboys and Warrington Schoolboys and formally Burnley FC's captain, Josh played representative schoolboys football between 2009 and 2012. As a Birchwood student, he was part of a strong Warrington contingent that propelled the schoolboys team within one step of a major national final. Josh was in the last Cheshire Schoolboys team to win the Northern Counties League in 2011/12.
More recently representing Cheshire Schools' FA, leading the way is Niobe Mellor-Antill from last years Cheshire U16 Girls squad, who over the last year received multiple callups for U16 and U17 England international squads. Being recognised at two international age levels is a tremendous accomplishment and highlights the quality, commitment and potential Niobe continues to demonstrate. Everyone involved with Cheshire football is incredibly proud to see her representing her country.
The Cheshire U14 Girls have also been celebrating international recognition. Carys Williams and Lois Lightfoot have both been selected for the Wales U16 squad, two age groups above their current representative level.
Another exciting call-up comes for Shiolah Gardner who has been selected for the Jamaica U17 squad as they prepare for the upcoming World Cup qualifying matches against Mexico, Costa Roca and Panama.
Last season saw a Cheshire duo earn England Schoolgirl call-ups with Carys Williams and Scarlett Malley being selected for the 2025/26 season following their outstanding trials at the regional trial weekend.
